How to Choose Aluminum Picture Frame Profiles

DAMAX · Profile selection guide

Choose an aluminum picture frame profile around the complete frame build, then confirm its appearance with a sample.

Two profiles can look similar from the front while accepting different backing, corner fittings or hanging hardware. For a wholesale assortment, check both the visible style and the cross-section before choosing a model. “Aluminum” and “aluminium” refer to the same material; suppliers may also describe frame profiles as metal picture frame mouldings.

Use the product documents to build your shortlist

Start with DAMAX’s aluminium picture frame catalogue and the technical model catalogue (PDF). Identify a profile from its section drawing, then confirm the drawing revision and matching fittings for your order.

Send the model reference or a drawing with your size and quantity mix. If you have not chosen a model, describe the required border appearance and complete frame contents so we can discuss suitable options.

1. Start with the artwork and frame contents

State the artwork width and height, the units, and whether a mount or mat board will be used. Then list the transparent front panel, artwork, mount and backing. Their combined thickness determines how much usable space the frame needs.

Separate the artwork size, visible opening and outside frame size. They describe different things. Do not assume that a frame labelled with an artwork size has the same outer dimensions, or that every profile of the same overall depth has the same usable rebate.

How to record the size before ordering

  1. Measure the item being framed. Record its full width and height, with the unit. Measure the physical print or mount that will sit inside the frame, including borders.
  2. Describe any mount or mat. If the print sits behind a mount, provide the mount’s outside size and window opening separately.
  3. State what each dimension means. Label artwork size, visible opening and outside frame size explicitly. Include a maximum outside size if shelf space or packaging limits it.
  4. List the complete stack. Provide the front panel, artwork, mount and backing thicknesses when known, plus the retention and hanging requirements.
  5. Confirm fit before cutting or production. Agree the selected profile, actual usable space, size definitions and an assembled sample. Ask DAMAX to confirm any cutting allowance or clearance for that build.
DimensionMeaningInformation for the quote
Artwork / mount sizeThe outside size of the item held in the frameWidth × height, unit, and whether it refers to the print or the mount
Visible openingThe area visible from the front after the frame or mount covers its edgesRequired window opening or any detail that must stay visible
Outside frame sizeThe full external width and height of the assembled frameAny display, shipping or retail-pack size limit
Usable internal spaceThe space available for the complete contents and retention systemFront panel, artwork, mount and backing stack; matching hardware

These definitions do not provide a universal cutting formula. The profile and agreed assembly determine the finished dimensions and required clearance.

2. Read the important dimensions on the section drawing

Dimension or featureWhat to confirmWhy it matters
Visible face widthThe border seen from the frontControls the visual balance around the artwork.
Overall profile depthThe external front-to-back dimensionAffects the side appearance; it is not automatically usable internal space.
Usable rebate / internal spaceThe space for glazing, artwork, mount and backingThe complete stack must fit with the chosen retention system.
Channels and groovesTheir actual shape and matching fittingsSimilar-looking sections may use different corner or backing hardware.
Finished frame sizeArtwork size, opening and outer dimensionsPrevents errors in cutting, packaging and assortment planning.

Use the selected model’s drawing and agreed revision. A photograph or screen rendering cannot confirm wall thickness, tiny grooves or tolerances. Where a required dimension is missing, ask for confirmation rather than scaling it from an image.

3. Check corners, backing retention and hanging hardware

Ask which corner connectors, screws, backing retainers and hangers match the proposed section. Confirm whether they are included in the quotation. If your workshop already uses a connector system, provide its drawing or a sample; matching outer profile dimensions alone does not establish compatibility.

For larger frames, review the intended finished size, total weight and hanging arrangement with the supplier. There is no universal maximum size or load rating for every aluminium picture frame profile.

4. Approve the finish as a complete specification

Specify colour, surface texture and sheen separately. Anodizing describes a surface treatment; brushing describes a directional texture. A brushed appearance may therefore form part of an anodized finish rather than being a mutually exclusive option.

DAMAX’s core surface treatments include anodizing and brushing. Confirm the requested colour and treatment for the chosen model. Use a physical reference sample to agree appearance, especially when several sizes must form one coordinated range.

5. Review a representative assembled sample

  • Check that the artwork, front panel and backing fit the intended build.
  • Review the front, back, side and all four corners under consistent lighting.
  • Check corner alignment, fitting access and the agreed hanging arrangement.
  • Confirm packaging with the finished dimensions, not just the bare profile dimensions.
  • Record the model, drawing revision, finish reference and component list for repeat orders.
A useful first inquiry

“We need frames for [artwork sizes], with [front panel / mount / backing], in [finish]. Please recommend suitable profiles and matching hardware for [quantity] delivered to [destination].”

Browse DAMAX frame styles and profiles, then review individual model specifications. If you need a complete frame instead of workshop stock, compare supply formats before requesting prices.

Discuss your frame requirements with DAMAX

Share your company, destination, artwork sizes, finish and estimated quantity. We will review the proposed specification and confirm quotation and sample options.
